American Idol Was Good Tonight Including Sanjaya Malakar
April 3, 2007 |
American Idol was pretty good tonight considering it has been turning into a bit of a sideshow with the Sanjaya Malakar Factor. But even Sanjaya put on a pretty good performance as well this evening. Tony Bennett was the musical guest and coach for the Idol contestants this week and it’s really great to see the Idols get a good mix of talent to coach them along in their musical careers. Of course, Tony Bennett is one of the all time greats of music and at 80 years old is still putting out albums. Duets: An American Classic is his latest effort.
Everyone did fairly well tonight and here’s how the show unfolded:
Blake Lewis - Blake sang the song made famous by Bobby Darin, Mack The Knife and it was classic Blake. This was a great song for him because he has that hip jazz thing going on anyway and it was right up his alley. Blake could win.
Phil Stacey - I’ve given Phil a hard time because I don’t think he is the most talented guy out there, but he shined tonight with his rendition of Night And Day. I think we finally got to hear Phil’s true voice tonight and he’s better than I expected, but he’s not the best, Melinda Doolittle is.
Melinda Doolittle - Melinda sang I’ve Got Rhythm and she is just incredible. Melinda teaches everyone a lesson every week and I’m nearly running out of words to describe how incredible she is. She’s one of the best Idols we’ve ever seen.
Chris Richardson - Chris put on a stellar performance tonight and he finally broke out of the Boy Band image thing this evening. It was by far Chris’ best performance in this competition.
Jordin Sparks - For only being 17 years old Jordin has talent and maturity well beyond her years. I think the name of her song was On A Clear Day and it was incredible. She may not win American Idol, but she will definitely have a singing career in her future.
Gina Glocksen - Gina sang Smile this evening and it was just okay for me. She didn’t look right tonight and it looked as though she had been poked in the eye or something. I think it was Gina’s least inspiring performance to date. Hopefully she will survive the vote and still be in it next week because I really like her.
Sanjaya Malakar - Sanjaya can sing when he wants to and he proved it tonight. His dancing with Paula and entertainment value was refreshing instead of him pulling off some silly hair thing to get votes. I actually thought Sanjaya did well tonight.
Haley Scarnato - I was surprised by Haley for the second time tonight. She really can sing. I thought her first few weeks were pretty bad, but she is beginning to look a lot more comfortable on stage. I’m In Love With You was her song and I thought she did a pretty good job.
Lakisha Jones - When Lakisha sings you realize that if this competition were all about talent, it would be a two girl final between her and Melinda Doolittle. Lakisha put on another top performance tonight and is earning her spot in music history by just plain singing every week.
It was refreshing to watch American Idol tonight because we are beginning to see what weeks of coaching and grueling practice can do. This isn’t turning out to be as bad as I thought it would be.
Do you want another prediction as to who will go home tomorrow evening? I think it will either be Gina Glocksen or Phil Stacey. Hey, if I pick two I have a better chance of getting it right. We’ll see.

I was peaked by all the negative publicity about Sanjaya and so I decided to check him out on tonight’s show. Forgot his name, did not see a male contestant that looked like any of Sanjaya’s pictures so figured he was out. Listened to the first six and number 7 appealed to me especially after hearing the screamers, 8 & 9 same-o, same-o. My vote went to 7 and much to my surprise, it was Sanjaya. (That I knew after I checked the Internet).
Why? He’s sweet. : ) refreshing! the kid next door. etc. etc. Singing was good too.
Way to go Sanjaya!
