The American Idol Hollywood week was brutal right out of the gate for the ladies. The first six hopefuls were shot down by Simon as having no originality. The group included Jory Steinberg and Porcelana Patino which were favorites among the judges when they first auditioned. Porcelana went into Rocky like training for Idol, but at least she’s in shape. I didn’t think she would make it into the top 12 but I didn’t think she would go this early.

Perla Meneses then shook her hips enough to get into the next round. She was all personality and very little singing ability which Simon confronted her about. She showed her true ability in the group round and was cut when she couldn’t hit her notes correctly.

Up next was Rachel Jenkins who’s husband is in Iraq. She gave it her all, but unfortunately it wasn’t good enough, which was quite disappointing. She brought a picture of her husband to the audition for moral support so it was sad to see she didn’t make the cut. Nicole Turner also went home and felt like she should have sang the song she wanted to sing instead of trying to please her mom. The judges get pretty frank at this point and told her it wouldn’t have mattered. Sorry Nicole, at this round there aren’t any second chances.

Baylie Brown was up in the mix of female singers and sounded great which earned her a chance to go on to the group round. This turned out to be the shocker of the Idol season so far as Baylie was cut after the group auditions. Simon warned the contestants not to forget the lyrics and that’s exactly what happened to Baylie. I thought she was a shoe in for the top 12, but unfortunately that won’t be. I believe she just had a bad day and will have other opportunities because of her ability. Sorry Baylie.

Jamie Lynn Ward and Melinda Doolittle moved on to the next round. I had picked Melinda to be in the top 12 so we’ll see how it goes.

The guys were up next and started out much better than the ladies. I was writing down names as fast as I could but probably didn’t get everyone included. Chris Sligh and Matt Sato along with Castro look-a-like Sean Michel made it to the second round of group auditions. Chris Sligh rocked in his group audition and is sure to do well as I have predicted he will be in the top 12. The sad story was Matt Sato who did his momma proud and got very emotional as he made it to each successive round. However, in the group auditions Matt couldn’t hit a single note and was cut. He took it pretty well and was actually less emotional for not making it. Bummer dude.

Jason Sundance Head managed to squeak by and get into this evening’s round. I’m not sure what we will see tonight, but Jason realized he must do much better if he has any chance of moving on.

There was plenty of bickering, flirting and hurt feelings in the group rounds as contestants found suitable or unsuitable people to sing with. And I think being with a certain group had a major influence on how some contestants sang.

Sorry to have to go back to the Bayile Brown thing again, but she just got a raw deal. Amanda Coluccio had a serious attitude problem and her and her friend Antonella Barba bickered with each other for a long time while Baylie hung around. Baylie put up with a lot of crap including Amanda Coluccio’s flirting instead of working. Unfortunately the stress of the whole deal affected Baylie more than Amanda and Baylie forgot her words. But eventually Amanda got her just reward and was sent home. Thank you to the judges. We won’t put up with attitudes, we want talent!

Another sad reality from the auditions was that Sanjaya and Shyamali Malakar won’t be together for the next round as Shyamali was cut. I picked them both to be in the top 12. It was quite apparent how much Sanjaya loves his sister as he was crying when he meet her in the lobby and realized she had to go home.

So what happened to some of the other favorites that we didn’t see at all last night? Are they being hidden and we’ll be surprised tonight or were they just not able to make it to Hollywood?

What happened to:

Jimmy McNeal
Rachel Zevita - No sign of her?
Sarah Krueger - One of my early favorites to be in the top 12
Lakisha Jones
Brandon Rogers - I though I saw him in one of the winners rooms
Katie Bernard - the girl with the squeaky voice

The producers have to leave us somewhat in suspense as we anticipate tonight’s top 24. After tonight everything changes on American Idol as the public gets to decide who stays and who goes. Don’t forget to tune in and see who we get to eventually vote on.

They had mentioned some time back that the viewers were going to vote on an original song for the contestants to perform. Does anyone have any idea how or where an original song can be submitted?
