New York Hosts American Idol Auditions
January 25, 2007 |
I missed the first 30 minutes of American Idol last evening so I’m probably missing some important stuff and I’ll have to get that news elsewhere. I came in to the New York auditions watching Clifton Little (Some of these names might be off as I was scribbling notes) and his harmonica serenade the judges. Clifton’s rendition of ZZ Top’s Tush was screaming, bizarre and irritating and the judges thought likewise. For a second song he played his harmonica and it was fairly good, but annoyingly loud.
Kia Thornton’s singing Aretha Franklin Ain’t No Way was the first contestant I saw make it to Hollywood from New York. And then we saw something I don’t think I’ve ever seen on Idol before. Nakia Claiborne sang a enthusiastic Dancin In The Streets and I thought the judges were going to put her through to Hollywood, but then they asked her to sing a second song, and she blew it. It was probably one of the saddest let downs we’ve ever seen on American Idol. Unfortunately, Nakia’s off pitch singing was revealed during her second song. It’s probably better that she didn’t make it to Hollywood because it would have been a lot tougher on her at that point.
Sarah Goldberg was there for comfort after Nakia’s emotional plea with the judges to let her through was turned down and then Sarah had her chance to impress the judges. Don’t know what happened to Sarah through the audition, but she turned on the judges and the whole American Idol process as she started preaching to the judges and cameras after her audition. The problem with Sarah was that she couldn’t sing and she knew it, but she wanted to be taught how to sing through the Idol process. Sorry Sarah, I’d like to be a brain surgeon, but the time to teach me isn’t during surgery. It doesn’t work like that sweetie.
Thankfully we were refreshed by Jory Steinberg who made her audition easy according to the judges. Simon’s comment was, “Why can’t they all be like that?” I think viewers would agree with Simon on that point. Of course Jory went on to Hollywood. Porcelana Patino was up next and was what one would call the American Idol Soldier. She trained, lost weight, looked good and sang good and earned herself a trip to Hollywood. But she has an attitude and that just doesn’t fly with Idol viewers and voters. The attitude didn’t work for Brenna Gethers last year and it won’t work for Porcelana this year.
Chris Henry then graced us with a beautiful female voice coming out of a male body. Really, if you closed your eyes and listened to Chris, he sounded like a woman, but it was way too weird for the judges and he didn’t make the cut. Rachel Zevita then graced us with a performance that was nothing less than amazing. She sang three different songs with three distinctly different voices and was easily put through to Hollywood. When Rachel figures out who she really is and sticks with that one voice she will probably be unbeatable. As Rachel said, she can sing anything, but she does need to tone down the tude a bit to win over the public.
Christopher Richardson looked like Justin Timberlake and with his singing ability he received a unanimous yes from all four judges. Nicholas Pedro is back this season and was put through to Hollywood for his rendition of Fly Me To The Moon. It was brilliant, but he better be able to remember his lyrics this season so he doesn’t have to gracefully bow out as he did last year.
The New York Idol auditions ended with weird from Isadora Julie Furman. Orgasm Chick, as she will be now be know by many for her bizarre singing of Lady Marmalade, claimed she was a palm reading clairvoyant. Oh really Julie, how come you didn’t know you should have spared us and the judges from witnessing your painful audition? My wife, who is a mental health counselor, commented that many people who audition on American Idol aren’t that well in touch with reality. Julie, or Isadora as she likes to be called, was definitely living in an alternate reality.
In all, 35 contestants made it through to the next round from New York, the most productive Idol auditions yet.
We’re on to Birminham Alabama, where we discovered Bo Bice, next week for some southern soul. Stay tuned.

Yeah, I agree that seeing the rejection of Nakia Claiborne was heartbreaking. I think the telling moment was when she said something like, “Sometimes you just get tired of being told no” in between sobs. Whew, sort of a reminder of how tough life can be sometimes. Weird how that little moment bummed me out for a few days. I wish she could have a little bit of William Hung’s 15 minutes, but I don’t think she’s bad enough of a singer to have that comedy effect. Normally, I enjoy watching these early auditions for some laughs, but this was just plain SAD. Not sure if I can watch anymore. Good luck Nakia! Keep your head up.
