American Idol Seattle Freak Show
January 18, 2007 | 2 Comments
Seattle was a freak show for American Idol last night and the wannabes were out in force. David Mills, who looked more suited to work on the Space Shuttle, kind of summed up the crowd in Seattle. Now that I think about it, all the wannabes were engineers with little to no social skills, much less singing skills.
There was the usual Idol friendship where they show a couple of guys who become the best of friends just by standing in line, or rather waiting in a hotel lobby together. Kenneth (didn’t get his last name) and Jonathan Jayne became best buddies encouraging each other even when neither of them had an ounce of talent. Jonathan’s version of God Bless American was more like a curse than a blessing and Kenneth’s Boy Band impression was just plain weird.
While Simon was downright cruel to Kenneth because of his appearance, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them back on the Final Idol Show, probably sitting in the front row.
Some people really stand out as being totally bizarre and last night’s winner was Steven Thoen, aka Red. Red did a version of Bohemian Rhapsody that sounded like he was injuring small animals in the process. Ryan Seacrest refered to the rendition as Bohemian Crapsody.
There were some stand outs in Seattle on the positive side such as Shamali and Sanjaya Malakar, a brother and sister team that both made it to Hollywood. Sanjaya sang the Stevie Wonder tune, Signed, Sealed, Delivered which earned him a trip to the next round and possibly into the top 12. I’m making a prediction here because this guy can sing, we might see him in the top 3.
The judges went gaga over Jordin Sparks who sang Celine Dion’s Because You Loved Me. She sang pretty good, but I wasn’t that impressed because there isn’t anything different about her. She looks nice and sings nice, but there isn’t any edge like Sanjaya Malakar had.
Anna Kearns had a different style a bit on the sassy side, which is what Idol is looking for, but I think her height will be a hindrance. How many 6′4″ female entertainers or singers do you see around? Simon Cowell said she looked like a giraffe, this coming from a short guy who thinks dress up means putting on a t-shirt with a print on it.
Next week we are on to Memphis and hope to find some talent there. So far things are looking pretty slim. Of course, we didn’t see Kellie Pickler until the one of last audition shows in 2006. I thought Kellie would win when I saw her audition but, you don’t need to win to be famous.

Sanjaya’s good looks is more than enough to bring him success and he doesn’t need American Idol to get there. I’m certain we will see more of him on the Internet and other Media. Don’t be surprised when he is offered a TV or movie contract. “Best of luck to you Sanjaya” mlv
[...] In fact, my prediction is that he actually will win. Yes, I know I’ve been wrong on every single one of my predictions so far. Actually, I did make a prediction back on January 18th after his audition that Sanjaya would make it into the top 3. But that was back when I thought the guy could really sing. Sanjaya can sing, but he sure isn’t showing it. It seems like he’s playing a game to see how weird he can get with his hair, instead of singing. [...]
